History

The Northern Nevada Human Resources Association (NNHRA) was formed November 15, 1968, with the Secretary of State as the Northern Nevada Personnel Association, Inc. (NNPA).  The chapter was affiliated with the American Society for Personnel Administration (ASPA) from its inception.  In 1968, the filing fee to become a non-profit was $1.

Our first Board of Trustees for the chapter included, Carl Bonstead, Vince LaVeaga, June Edmisten, Drexel Strahm, Edward Cahill, Robert Jeffers and Steve Howard.    The initial membership meetings were held in the evening at the Liberty Belle Restaurant on South Virginia Street.

The Northern Nevada Personnel Association was organized solely for educational purposes in that its exclusive function shall be the advancement, through this organization, of the knowledge, abilities, and effectiveness of its membership as persons engaged in the professions related to personnel management within the area of its operation.  Our first president was Carl Bonstead.   Membership was limited to persons engaged in professions related to personnel administration as a vocation.

In 1989, American Society for Personnel Administration (ASPA) name was changed to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) to reflect its broadened scope and influence in business and political worlds internationally.  This in turn associated our chapter #0123 with SHRM.

On November 14, 1991, the chapter was renamed to Northern Nevada Human Resources Association, Inc., a local chapter of the Society for Human Resources Management.  Leslie Hathaway was the NNHRA president who filed the amendment with the State of Nevada.

For forty years the chapter has remained committed to the philosophy of the founders, and continues to provide a forum for practitioners to discuss current challenges and to provide a medium for professional development as stated in our current mission to  “serve the professional and advance the profession.”

Purpose

The purposes of this Chapter, as a non-profit organization, are:

  • to provide a forum for the personal and professional development of our members;
  • to provide an opportunity to develop leadership, managerial, public speaking and group decision-making skills;
  • to provide an arena for the development of trust relationships where common problems can be discussed and deliberated;
  • to provide an opportunity to focus on current human resource management issues of importance to our members;
  • to provide a focus for legislative attention to state and national human resource management issues;  to provide valuable information gathering and dissemination channels;
  • to provide a pool of human resource management leaders for perpetuation of the Chapter and of SHRM;
  • to serve as an important vehicle for introducing human resource management professionals to SHRM;
  • to serve as a source of new members for SHRM; and
  • to serve as part of the two-way channel of communications between SHRM and the individual members.

The Northern Nevada Human Resources Association supports the purposes of SHRM, which are

  • to promote the use of sound and ethical human resource management practices in the profession and:
  • to be a recognized world leader in human resource management;
  • to provide high-quality, dynamic and responsive programs and service to our customers with interests in human resource management;
  • to be the voice of the profession on human resource management issues;
  • to facilitate the development and guide the direction of the human resource profession; and
  • to establish, monitor and update standards for the profession.
